Come join us and experience a hands-on Zen derived Sumi-e (ink painting) class followed by a Macrobiotic mean with influences from Japanese Zen traditions. Enjoy how each brush strokes produce different tones and shades, and experience uniqueness of Sumi-e. You’ll bring home your artwork in a frame. The lesson takes place at Hanada Rosso, a macrobiotic and organic food cafe. Complete the experience by relaxing tea time. In the full course B, experience Buddhism through Harajuku Veggie Hamburger Steak, a Zen-Macrobiotic meal.

The painting begins with obtaining black ink by grinding ink-stick. Through this process, you can relax and meditate. A Zen experience.

Next, the instructor will teach you how to create gradation and how to draw flowers. You will be surprised by how Ink wash produces variations in shapes and tones. That emphasize  Sumi-e. Hands-on experience brings a spirit of fun and beauty of the Japanese culture. Regardless the level of your ability.

In addition to the basic brush techniques, the class will also draw flowers without using the brush. In the last part of the experience, you will create your original flowers, using techniques that you have learned. Let your imagination create your masterpiece! Take home your painting in a frame.

After the Sumi-e class, Hanada Rosso will be serving the following: Course A, organic tea and dessert. Course B, organic tea and dessert plus Harajuku Veggie Hamburger Steak. Experience Buddhism through healthy, delicious and vegan cuisine. Enjoy the combination of Sumi-e and tasty macrobiotic food.

This is a collaboration workshop between Sumi-e artist and macrobiotic cafe!

Who is the Sumi-e artist?
The instructor of the class is Hideyuki Kawamura. He is an experienced Sumi-e artist and veteran live drawing performer. His specialties are hanging scroll, long vertical art work, live drawing and scenic painting. He is working on the Sumi_e_motion project to spread Sumi-e, Japanese traditional painting techniques. 

What about the macrobiotic cafe and dinner in course B?
The workshop will take place at Hanada Rosso, a cafe that serves macrobiotic and organic food. It was founded by Minako Hanada (1929-2013) who had over 30 years in macrobiotic culinary endeavors. The cafe serves a unique dinner based on the authentic Washoku cuisine of the Edo period and Buddhism thoughts in food. Harajuku Veggie Hamburger Steak (in course B) is healthy, delicious and vegan with a fusion of traditional Japanese and western taste.

Our instructor, who has mastery of Kaiseki cuisine, will guide you step by step how to make the dishes and decorate the plates. Specifically, you will learn, e.g., how to make Dashi (soup stock), how to cook rice, and how to use cooking utensils and prepare ingredients, so even beginner chefs can have a great time!  You will also enjoy sake tasting. The class will be held in English and/or Japanese.

To begin the tour, we will be meeting at the “HIS Tourist Information Center” located in front of JR Harajuku Station. The first location will be the youth’s holy land “Takeshita-dori”. Once we enter this street we will visit “Daiso Harajuku”, which is a 100-yen shop that has stores all around the world. However, Harajuku’s store is a wonderful spot for purchasing souvenirs for friends and such. The store is uniquely filled with many small and cute items which are only available in Japan.
After our visit at “Daiso Harajuku”, your guide will walk you around Takeshita Street while introducing various highly recommended shops including “Totti Candy Factory”, which is a large colourful shop that sells cotton candy. We can stop by any shop that may interest you at all!
Once we pass through Takeshita-dori, we will have a short break at a special café called “Reissue”. This Latte Art café is the only one in the world that offers 3D latte art. They can create popular game characters such as Pikachu, popular anime characters and more. You are able to ask for any character which you like, if you are interested in creating your own Latte Art which your favourite character, by all means do so!
After our break, we will roam the back streets of Harajuku, where all the more fashionable shops are located. We will explore some wonderful photo shooting spots including a No.1 popular wall art spot called “NOW IS FOREVER” and browse through some super cute and Instagram worthy shops such as “Princess one Spoon”.
