You'll learn about Japanese woodworking and traditional musical instruments and even get to make your own chopsticks.
This tour will take you into the world of Japanese woodworking, learning about chopsticks, plus the Shamisen, and other traditional Japanese instruments and tools.
Why chopsticks? In Japan, learning to make chopsticks is the first step in training to craft a musical instrument. You may have heard or even seen Japanese instruments before, but with this trip, you’ll take a look up close at how they’re created by the skilled hands of professional artisans.

The Shamisen, a Japanese stringed instrument, first came to Japan in the 16th century and has been treasured as an instrument that is used for the music accompanying Bunraku and Kabuki and other traditional music. In order to be able to make Shamisen, chopstick-making is the very crucial first step every artisan has to take. You can experience this first step of becoming an artisan yourself.

Meet your personal interpreter at the South Exit of Hirai Station and walk to the "Mukouyama Instrument Shop" in Hirai and will take a fews minutes to get there.

You will then meet a Shamisen-making expert, who will be your host for the day. You will spend around 2 to 2.5 hours making chopsticks and hearing the stories from the host. You can bring back the chopsticks you make as a souvenir from the lesson.

During the lesson, extensive discussion periods will be provided for you to understand, through the interpreter, all about our hosts' world and values.

After the chopstick-making activities, you will be guided back to the train station.

Please note: the departure time and place of your tour may change. Please refer to the booking confirmation and Tour Detail email that you will receive after booking.
