Yamato-Koriyama is located in the northern part of Nara Prefecture and flourished as a castle town since ancient times. Nowadays, it is a city rich in historic vibe and also known as one of the best producers of goldfish in Japan. Here we offer a walking tour which shows you the spots unique to Yamato-Koriyama including the symbolic Koriyama Castle, the"K Coffee" featuring an one-of-a-kind fish tank converted from a phone booth, a goldfish production facility "Kingyoda", and the Goldfish Museum.

After meeting up with your local guide at Yamato-Koriyama Station located in Nara Prefecture, first visit Koriyama Castle, a proud symbol of the city.

The castle was built in the 16th century, and is known as one of the most famous cherry blossoms viewing spots in Japan in the spring, as noted in the definitive "Japan Cherry Blossom Hundred Picks" list. Depending on the season, here you can enjoy cherry blossoms (spring) or vivid fall colors (autumn). Spending approx. 45 minutes at Koriyama Castle will wow you because not only the stunning stone walls and architecture, but also its glorious harmony with nature as well as splendid exterior gate that was relocated from Negoriji in Wakayama Prefecture. You cannot miss the breathtaking view from the top that overlooks the town of Yamato-Koriyama.

Next, you will have the opportunity to explore Yanagi-cho shopping street, where the old castle town streets remain to this day. Highlights include Kazuki Inari Shrine with its elegant atmosphere, a Japanese sweet shop "Kikuya" that boasts a history of more than 400 years, and the cafe "K Coffee" featuring the one-of-a-kind fish tank converted from a phone booth. At "K Coffee" you can take a break and take some interesting photos of the goldfish swimming in the phone booth while sipping freshly roasted coffee. Your total time in the Yanagimachi shopping street area will be about 60 minutes.

At the final stop on the tour, explore the goldfish production center known as "Kingyoda" located just outside the center of the city. Yamato-Koriyama City hosts one of Japan's leading goldfish production sites, distributing approximately 60 million goldfish nationwide, or about 40% of the national share. Here on the outskirts of the city, the "Kingyoda" facility maintains about 50 hectares of goldfish culturing ponds, and the visuals of seeing great numbers of goldfish swimming about such a large area is something unforgettable. You’ll also visit Koriyama Goldfish Museum to learn more about the history and photograph various kinds of goldfish. Altogether, you will have around 50 minutes to enjoy the museum before heading back to the Yamato-Koriyama Station when the tour concludes.
