Nagano prefecture is widely known as the hometown of the Japanese Alps and the host of the Winter Olympics in 1998. This tour will take you to some of the highlights in the northern part of the prefecture. You can take the tour anytime, but the most scenic views you can see during the winter when the snowy landscape creates an unforgettable experience! Don't miss a chance to visit one of the most famous mountain sightseeing spots in Japan. Enjoy seeing the only bathing snow monkeys in the world and a chance to taste some local sake.

A visit to the snow monkeys is one of the highlights of a visit to Japan. Jigokudani Yaen-koen is a place to observe the interesting ecology of Japanese monkeys nearby, and many people in the world have loved this place since 1964 when it first opened. Many researchers and photographers has also visit here for the photo opportunity. The monkeys here are known as "Snow Monkeys” because they bathe in the hot springs and no other monkeys in the world do this.
In 1970, they were appeared in the cover of "LIFE" magazine in the U.S. and were reported by the press overseas. Furthermore, in 1998, when the winter Olympic Games were held in Nagano, many athletes, game staff, news media and tourists from foreign countries visited, and made it a big topic.
Soaking in the hot spring is only one part of the monkeys’ lives. Monkeys do not usually soak in the hot spring in the warm season because they soak in the hot spring in order to survive the severe winter weather. The best charm of Jigokudani Yaen-koen is not taking pictures of monkeys, however, but enjoying the ecology of wild monkeys to be able to observe nearby through a year and the rich nature itself of the animals, insects, plants, and so on. Please listen carefully on the walking trail to Jigokudani and you will experience the natural ecology of the area through your five senses!

Soak up the beauty of Nagano's mountainous landscape while cycling your way to the historic town of Obuse, known for being the beloved town of the famous painter Hokusai. After arriving in Obuse, take a dip in a natural hot spring and stroll around town, discovering its shops and regional specialties.

If you are looking to escape the hustle and bustle of Japan’s mega cities and want to soak up the fresh air of the countryside, this tour is the right choice for you. This tour offers you an opportunity to explore Nagano’s countryside through cycling, followed by a dip in a 100% natural hot spring and a visit to the historical town of Obuse.

Obuse is a town in Nagano where you can still feel the atmosphere of Japan’s Edo Period (1603-1867). Obuse is famous as the town where Hokusai Katsushika, world-famous Japanese artist known for his 36 Views of Mt. Fuji and for various other ukiyo-e paintings, spent the last years of his life. The town has developed into a tourist destination in the region and is full of small shops to explore.

You will meet up with your guide at Nagano Station at 8:45am. Take the train to Yudanaka Station, from where you will be taken to Kanbayashi Onsen, the starting point of your cycling adventure. Here you will get on your cycle and ride to Obuse for approximately 25 km (16 miles). On the way down, you will stop by some cultural spots, like an old onsen village or temple, and go past farmlands which will give you insight into local culture. The entire cycle is 3 hours of downhill or flat roads so it is a relatively easy cycle.

After reaching the town of Obuse, you take a break at Gansho-in Temple, where you get to see a huge painted phoenix on the ceiling, the last masterpiece of Hokusai.

Afterwards, you head to a hot spring (onsen in Japanese) where you will also eat lunch. The onsen you will visit is much beloved by the locals. Your guide will explain the bathing etiquette so you can enter without feeling lost*. The onsen has an outdoor bath with lovely view on the mountains. Having had your relaxing bath and Japanese lunch you head to the center of town to explore its attractions like a sake brewery, souvenir stores, or the Hokusai Art Museum (with additional fee).

The tour concludes at Obuse Station, you can either go back to Yudanaka Station or Nagano Station.
